
{"id":696,"date":"2014-03-18T09:23:12","date_gmt":"2014-03-18T14:23:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bernardwatch.com\/blog\/?p=696"},"modified":"2014-03-18T09:23:12","modified_gmt":"2014-03-18T14:23:12","slug":"ask-a-watch-guy-when-is-a-movement-in-house-or-eta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bernardwatch.com\/blog\/ask-a-watch-guy-when-is-a-movement-in-house-or-eta\/","title":{"rendered":"Ask A Watch Guy: When Is A Movement &#8220;In-House&#8221; or ETA?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Customer Emailed Us This Question:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;About 11 years ago?? maybe more I purchased a GP Richeville from you.<\/em><br \/>\n<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The watch is fine.\u00a0 This week I took it\u00a0 to a watchmaker I deal with, who checked it, and casually remarked that the movement was an ETA movement.\u00a0 I just wanted to know if that was the way GP did that model? \u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And if one buys a GP how does one know if the movement is in house&#8211;or an ETA&#8211; which I assume GP modifies in some way.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A watchmaker will recognize a base caliber relatively easily, but for everyone else, it can be difficult to find out what movement is used.\u00a0 We subscribe to various trade publications, which sometimes detail the base calibers and we also turn to the internet for research.<\/p>\n<p>ETA movements were commonly used by GP when that model was made.\u00a0 It is an ETA 2892-A2 modified for small seconds and pointer date.\u00a0 Manufacturers typically rename the movement to their own caliber number (in this case GP caliber 2201) to reflect the work they did on the movement.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, ETA did not offer as many specialized modifications or finishing upgrades, and only a few manufacturers had the resources to upgrade the movements themselves.\u00a0 So a Girard-Perregaux modified movement would be purchased by other manufacturers who wanted a higher grade movement.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bernardwatch.com\/image\/archive\/GP279.JPG\" width=\"470\" height=\"659\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Girard-Perregaux : Richeville 27300.0.55<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Customer Emailed Us This Question: &#8220;About 11 years ago?? maybe more I purchased a GP Richeville from you.
